Facebook planning to launch Open Graph actions tomorrow?

Back in September at the F8 Conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company would deliver a “frictionless” experience across the Web through applications. And starting tomorrow, he plans to make good on that promise, according to a new report.
The world’s largest social network will be holding a press event in San Francisco tomorrow unveiling the first group of Open Graph actions that share user activities from outside the site with its users, All Things Digital is reporting, citing sources. The sources didn’t say how many actions, which are basically simple applications, will launch as part of Facebook’s Open Graph initiative.
The focus behind Facebook’s applications idea is to combine the “actions” users engage in both on the world’s largest social network and off, into a single spot in their Open Graph. So, if a user is listening to a song, watching a television show, or reading a news article across the Web, it can be shared on Facebook for friends to see. Those friends can then join in and do the same. At F8, Zuckerberg said that the idea could create “a completely new class of social apps than what was ever possible before.”
Of course, all this doesn’t happen automatically. Facebook will require users to opt-in to share from a site. After doing so, all their activities on that site will be shared with friends back on Facebook until he or she decides to turn it off.
At F8, Facebook said that all the content shared won’t show up in a person’s news feed. Instead, the data will be found in their Timeline, with the ultimate goal of creating a visual record of what a person has done over the course of several years.
Facebook made its Timeline available last year. The feature is currently opt-in, but the social network is widely expected to transition all accounts to Timeline in the coming days. As All Things Digital’s Liz Gannes points out, that rollout would likely coincide with Open Graph Actions’ launch, since the applications require Timeline to work.
Facebook announced in late December that it would start approving Open Graph applications this month. Once it’s approved, the developer will receive a notification from Facebook telling them when they can start offering it to users.
Facebook did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for confirmation of the All Things Digital report.

Rihanna ‘smoking weed in Hawaii’: Singer posts cannabis quote on Twitter

She has been spotted over the past few days puffing on a suspicious looking cigarette during her Hawaiian holiday.
And yesterday Rihanna appeared to clear up exactly what she has been smoking by quoting some lyrics from rapper Drake’s song Up All Night on her Twitter page.
She wrote: ‘Kush rolled, glass full… I prefer the better things!’ Kush refers to a type of cannabis found mainly in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
Bad habit: Rihanna was spotted smoking a suspicious looking cigarette for the second day running on her Hawaiian holiday

Is that the best idea? Rihanna took the cigarette with her for a dip in the ocean
[caption
The singer, who features in a new
Armani campaign, seemed pensive as she waded out into the sea in a
skin-tight hot pink dress, which she was wearing over a green and black
bikini.
She splashed around in knee-deep water while clutching the hand-rolled cigarette, after taking a walk earlier in the day.
The
brown papered roll-up looked remarkably similar to a ‘blunt’, which is
slang for a marijuana filled cigar. The type favoured and popularised in
hip-hop music.
Relaxed: The 23-year-old singer looked happy and relaxed as she made the most of her time off

Making a habit of it? Even Rihanna’s sexy cut out beach cover-up couldn’t detract from the cigarette
Beach chic: Rihanna chose a casual style for her relaxing day out
In 2008, a ballot was passed in Hawaii which made possession of marijuana the lowest priority for law enforcement.
This means that under this county
code, adults over the age of 21 are allowed to possess up to 24 plants
or 24 ounces of marijuana on private property.
In public, the possession of less
than one ounce of marijuana is classed as a misdemeanour offence, which
can be punished by a fine of up to $1,000 and 30 days in jail.
Possession of one ounce or more can be punished by a fine of up to $2,000 and up to one year in prison.

Water babe: Rihanna waded into the ocean while smoking her hand-rolled cigarette
Spotted: A car drives past Rihanna as she takes a stroll in the sunshine

Peaceful: Rihanna seemed deep in her thoughts and was enjoying her own company
While some people undoubtedly just smoke
the cigars, Rihanna did look rather laidback over the weekend as she
lolled on her sunlounger.
Rihanna looked blissful and deep in thought while taking a private moment for herself.
The singer has been quite vocal on her Twitter page recently, telling fans how she has been enjoying her time off.
Earlier on in the week the Rihanna tweeted: ’4:20…Hi.’ The figure 4.20 is another slang term for marijuana.

Flaunting it: Rihanna’s fantastic figure was visible underneath her skin-tight beach outfit
The Umbrella singer was enjoying the Hawaiian sunshine on Sunday.
Her face free of make-up, she looked totally at ease wearing black leggings and a hot pink vest top.
The barefoot singer sat on a sun lounger and puffed away before lying back and taking in the scenery.
Smokey: Rihanna takes a smoking break after exercising on Sunday during her stay in Hawaii
Taking it easy: The pop star laid back and enjoyed the sunshine after her workout session
Island living: The singer is taking a break in Hawaii
WHAT IS A BLUNT?
A blunt is a slang term for cannabis rolled with tobacco leaf typically in the form of a hollowed out cigar.
It is popular with marijuana users who have taken to removing the tobacco so that the smoker can refill it with the drug.
It’s been a relaxing few weeks for the singer from Barbados.
She jetted into Hawaii at the weekend
after spending a few days in Los Angeles, where she was seen sitting
court side at a couple of basketball games.
Two weeks ago the Good Girl Gone Bad welcomed the New Year in Miami with P Diddy.

Chilling out: Rihanna looked totally relaxed on her smoking break
Enjoying the sun: Rihanna looked totally at peace while she took a moment for herself

Stop glorifying drugs!! Famous people get away with it and people brush it off. How different it is for ordinary people. My son is a recovering heroin addict and the stigma of his addiction has affected his recovery and his whole family. One rule for one and one rule for another.

I may be cynical but these pictures seem pretty set up just like the previous ones. Its hardly like she is trying to hide it. Personally I would love to join her for a drink and a J!

Wikipedia to Go Dark in SOPA Protest, Twitter Declines
January 17, 2012 by admin

IDG News Service —
Wikipedia has decided to black out the English version of the online encyclopedia for 24 hours on Wednesday to protest against controversial legislation in the U.S., following a cue given by some other Internet sites including social news site Reddit which will black out its site for 12 hours on the same day.
Twitter’s CEO Dick Costolo however said in a message on Twitter that “Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish”. He later clarified that he was talking about Twitter and not about Wikipedia’s decision.
Wikimedia Foundation said on Monday that the Wikipedia community had chosen to black out its English version to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate.
“If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States,” Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, said in a statement on its website.
Three officials of U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration issued a statement on Saturday on legislation including SOPA, the Protect IP Act (PIPA), and the Online Protection and Digital ENforcement Act (OPEN), in response to petitions.
“While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet,” said the statement which was signed by Victoria Espinel, the White House intellectual property enforcement coordinator, Aneesh Chopra, U.S. chief technology officer, and Howard Schmidt, special assistant to the president and cybersecurity coordinator for the National Security Staff.
The statement did not directly say whether the White House opposes SOPA or PIPA.
Trevor Timm, an activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said on Monday that the Obama administration drew “an important line in the sand” by stating that it will not support legislation “that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet”.
Yet, the fight is still far from over, he said, as the Senate is still poised to bring PIPA to the floor next week, and SOPA proponents in the House are likely to try to revive the legislation, unless they get the message that these initiatives must stop.
Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s cofounder, said on Twitter on Monday that “Rumors of the death of SOPA may be premature” and added that “PIPA is still going strong”. “But the best action for twitter might be to let us continue to use the service to organize our protests”, he said.

Jon Huntsman exit registers small blip on Facebook
January 17, 2012 by admin
POLITICO has joined forces with Facebook to offer readers an exclusive look at the conversation taking place on the social networking site about the Republican presidential candidates ahead of South Carolina’s crucial primary on Jan. 21.

Mentions of Jon Huntsman among Facebook users spiked slightly on Sunday, according to a survey of users by the social network provided exclusively to POLITICO.
But users apparently feel relatively indifferently about the Utah governor decision to drop out of the presidential race and endorse Mitt Romney. News of Huntsman’s plans broke on Sunday, and likely made the rounds on Facebook.
Both positive and negative talk about Huntsman among Facebook users dropped dramatically below the other GOP presidential candidates on Sunday, the day before Huntsman announced his plans to leave the race. Facebook doesn’t measure neutral sentiment about the presidential contenders, so it’s possible that that was the way in which most users discussed Huntsman’s exit.
According to the Facebook data, Huntsman has long lagged far behind his rivals in terms of Facebook mentions, or users who talked about Huntsman in posts to their walls, status updates, comments on their Facebook pages or shared links about him with their friends.
Huntsman enjoyed a slight uptick in Facebook user interest the day of the New Hampshire primary, when he placed third. That marked the high point — in terms of Facebook buzz — of his presidential candidacy.
Facebook uses an automated process to identify and analyze all Facebook posts and comments that are made by U.S. users and mention any of the presidential candidates. The analysis of sentiment is done using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, a well-validated software tool used frequently in social psychological research to identify positive and negative emotion in text. No employees at Facebook or POLITICO read the posts and all measures are aggregated by candidate and by day. Facebook provided POLITICO with total post volumes and average sentiment levels for each candidate from Dec. 12 through Jan. 15.

Mitt Romney, Ron Paul tops in Facebook fans

POLITICO has joined forces with Facebook to offer readers an exclusive look at the conversation taking place on the social networking site about the Republican presidential candidates ahead of South Carolina’s crucial primary on Jan. 21.

Mitt Romney and Ron Paul outpace their GOP rivals in official Facebook fans, with Romney leading the pack at just under 1.4 million fans as of Jan. 14.
Paul — who is known for his organizational prowess on such social-networking sites as Facebook and Twitter — clocks in at roughly 800,000 Facebook fans. That’s according to an analysis of the candidates’ official fan pages provided exclusively to POLITICO by Facebook.
The official fan page data is fairly reflective of what has happened thus far in the Republican presidential contests — with some important exceptions. Romney placed first in both the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses and Jan. 10 New Hampshire primary and has by far a more formidable campaign organization than his rivals.
Paul placed third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire and his reputation for grassroots organizing seems to extend to Facebook.
But Rick Santorum — who shot from the back of the pack to place a close second in the Iowa caucuses — has fewer than 200,000 Facebook followers and didn’t receive much of a fan bump after coming in just eight votes shy of Romney on Jan. 3. Santorum’s official fan page ranks fifth among his most-prominent GOP rivals, ahead of only Jon Huntsman – who exited the presidential race Monday after finishing third in New Hampshire and receiving no bump, either in real life or on Facebook.
Newt Gingrich has slightly more than 200,000 official Facebook fans; Rick Perry is close behind him.
The number of unique users sharing stories about Romney’s official fan page has trended sharply upward since Dec. 15, when Facebook began tracking it. Sharing includes such activities as liking the candidate’s official page; posting to the page’s wall; liking, commenting or sharing one of the page’s posts; answering a question posted to the candidate’s official wall, RSVPing to an event; or tagging a picture associated with the page.
Romney’s Facebook momentum began slightly after Christmas, and that trend continued through the Iowa caucuses, when more than 100,000 people were sharing information about his page. It peaked Jan. 11, the day after the New Hampshire primary, which he won by a large margin.

Paul’s fans were also sharing information about the Texas lawmaker, but he actually saw a dip in official activity right before Iowa. In the week following — right before the New Hampshire primary — activity around his page spiked, peaking at people sharing over 100,000 people sharing information.
Santorum did get a post-Iowa bounce in Facebook-sharing about his official page, but it has not continued. Sharing of information about Huntsman was less voluminous than all of the other candidates; that activity peaked at 20,000 people during the height of his surge in New Hampshire.

Facebook to launch ‘Listen With’ feature
January 17, 2012 by admin
MANILA, Philippines – After allowing its users to share anything and everything, including their dirtiest thoughts and otherwise unprintable photos, Facebook will soon up the ante further by allowing users to share their music.
Facebook is making this possible via the new “Listen With” feature, which, according to a post by product designer Alexandre Roche, will allow for an enriching musical experience akin to a gang going out together to visit a dance club or watch a concert.
“You can listen to the same song at the exact same time—so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you’re jamming out at a performance or dance club,” he said.
Of course, one is allowed to control with whom he or she is listening and vice-versa.
Turning the feature on is easy. According to Roche, the feature will be denoted by a music note located in the chat sidebar, which allows one to see who among friends are listening to music at a given time.
To listen in, one simply hovers his cursor over their friend’s name, and clicks the “Listen With” button. The music will play through the service the friend is using. The user will also have the option to chat about the music he or she is listening to. Other people listening along can also join in a group chat.
Although yet to be made available until a couple of weeks from now, there is already gathering noise surrounding this new feature. For one, many are likening it to the music-sharing website, Turntable.fm.
But it isn’t as if the people behind Turntable.fm are really bothered about it.
“I’m flattered Facebook was inspired by turntable.fm and created a listen together feature,” said Turntable.fm’s Billy Chasen in an interview with livemusicguide.com.
Apparently, Turntable.fm has a slightly “creepier” format in which one can listen to music that strangers are listening to instead of their friends.
